| Family of Samuel Bridge of New Romney, 1778-1838 | |||||
| This branch of the Bridge family was brought to my attention by Peter Bridge, ggg-grandson of Samuel, who has put his public family tree on the Ancestry website. The link to the Smarden family is based on the settlement record, once again proving how useful these can be. | |||||
| 1776-7 | Smarden | Birth | Samuel Bridge | from burial and settlement record | presumed fourth son of Robert 3 |
| 4 May 1800 | New Romney | Marriage | Samual Bridge | & Frances Handcock | both of New Romney |
| 26 May 1800 | New Romney | Settlement | Samuel Bridge | son of a bricklayer | born in Smarden, Kent |
The actual record is in the collection of the
Kent County Archives, section P309/13/F. It is a record of the examination before
justices, to determine whether the applicant should be allowed to settle
and work in the parish. The wording is as follows.
The Examination of Samuel Bridge and Richard Mascall both of the parish of Romney in the said Town and Port Labourers concerning their respective Settlements to be taken upon Oath in open Court this 26th day of May 1800. Before his Majesties Justices of the peace there present. The point of the Settlement order was that it entitled the holder to receive benefits from the parish, under the provisions of the Poor Law. Anyone could take up work but if unable to support themselves they would be deported to their place of origin. Such "Removal Orders" were quite common. | |||||

| PJB = Peter John Bridge, who got in touch with me early in 2008 after discovering my web pages while researching his own branch of the family. Until then, I didn't know that this branch of the Bridge family existed, though it is clear that Peter's great grandfather Samuel came from Smarden and his birth date fits perfectly into the reconstructed family of Robert. | |||||
